VRU (Violence Reduction Unit)
Case Study -Empowering Women for Peace Project

Tehseen Ata is a 44 year old mum. Tehseen, was a member for a year for chai and then left due to wanting to study further, she was re-referred in September 2024 by the school as this Empowering Women Project would be of interest for her. Tehseen grew up in Pakistan and came to the UK 23 years ago. Previously her life revolved around the simple, familiar tasks of being a wife and mother – cooking, cleaning, and caring for her children and felt very unsafe in Oldham. It was a routine life, one that left little room for personal growth or exploration beyond her family. But that all changed when she joined the women’s chai project and got involved with Empowering Women for Peace project.

CHAI Family and Mental Health and Wellbeing Program 2024-2025

Zaib is a mother of 3 children that has been attending the Broadfield CHAI Project for over a year now. Zaib is also a chai volunteer. Zaib took part in all aspects of the One Oldham fund “CHAI Family and Mental Health and Wellbeing Program”, She regularly attended the 5 ways to wellbeing program because she wanted to learn how the 5 ways to wellbeing could help her and her children to improve their mental and physical health.

Zaib also felt fear of her safety in Oldham as she wears the hijab and is a Muslim woman and was extremely worried about hate from the race riots of summer 2024, she felt that attending the self-defence classes would help her feel safer so she got involved.

She wanted to become healthier so joined the Chai wellbeing walking group to improve her physical health, through this she was the motivated to regularly take her children for walks to Alexandra Park and through the project she learnt outdoor mindfulness activities which she shared with her children on their walks.

She took her children to the family seminar part of the project so they could also understand the 5 ways to wellbeing.
