Empowering Women

From diverse backgrounds

By Promoting
health, wellbeing & cultural engagement
through support, wellbeing activities & training

our Story

The Women’s CHAI Project was founded in 2011 by Najma Khalid MBE on a voluntary basis, inspired by her lived experience of Domestic Abuse—over a simple cup of chai (tea), a symbol of connection and support. CHAI stands for Care, Help, and Inspire, reflecting our aim which is a commitment to facilitating a safe and inclusive space where women can empower themselves and their families. We provide a supportive environment where women can build confidence, develop skills, and create positive change. The project also raises awareness of wellbeing, ensuring mothers are better equipped to support their children, themselves, and their communities.

Our Mission

To create a supportive and inclusive space where women from all backgrounds can thrive. Through education, advocacy, and community-driven initiatives, we facilitate opportunities for empowerment, resilience, and meaningful opportunities for growth. By addressing social, economic, and health-related challenges, we work to break down barriers and build a future where every woman can reach her full potential.

Our Vision

We strive for a world where all women—regardless of their background—are empowered, valued, and have access to the resources and opportunities they need to live fulfilling, independent lives.

What We Do

Our Weekly CHAI Groups & Activities:

We run 10 weekly CHAI groups—8 in Oldham, 1 in Rochdale, and 1 in Old Trafford—along with three physical activity sessions, including self-defence, Bollycise, and walking groups. Together, these sessions support over 200 disadvantaged women from diverse communities, primarily from BAME backgrounds.

In addition to our weekly groups, CHAI partners with organisations across Greater Manchester to deliver a wide range of activities, including:

  • Arts & crafts for wellbeing
  • Digital skills training
    Tackling health inequalities
  • Community safeguarding initiatives
  • Theatre and creative expression
  • Seminars with doctors and professionals

Based in Greater Manchester, CHAI reaches women from all backgrounds and has expanded its impact locally, nationally, and internationally, supporting thousands of women over the years.
